Reference local files

Hi, I can load Tumblr content in from the web but I don't know how to reference my local CSS and JS files. Should I be using layout templates, should I be using .erb file extensions for html pages, can I use middleman scripting etc.? If you could expand the documentation you have that would be great as the two files in the example folder are just about the config. Cheers!
