@mrmachine the "Not showing actual base and project settings. Set SHOW_SETTINGS=1 to change." message comes up every time I ever touch the python process and adds a lot of noise when I'm scanning console output.
What's the benefit to displaying that message? Do people need to be reminded of the settings cascade?

It's one line. It used to be 10+ lines showing the actual settings. Yep, I
think it's important to show. The split settings behaviour can be weird and
I bet nobody else will have read about or know that printing the order that
split settings are combined is even possible.
