Everything except for a few paths such as the pre-overlayed /etc and /var are read-only, including the root user home directory (/root).

  • Install overlay for root user or at least change its $HOME to somewhere under /media/az01-internal/

Currently changing the home directory for the user in /etc/passwd to something like /mnt/az01-internal/root and creating the directory works around it. Technically not safe for future firmware updates though.
