The smaller thumbnail sizes - small, medium, and perhaps a new size for 600x600 (for cover in homepage layout) - should automatically crop the provided image down to a 1:1 square aspect ratio before constraining the dimensions to the specified size. When an artwork is non-square and displayed in certain elements (cover and grid cells), the wiki automatically cuts off the edges and zooms in so there's no blank space. This causes an effective loss in quality that is particularly noticeable for these smaller image dimensions.
