which branch to use and contribute to?

Can you tell me which repo and branch would be a good place to start tinkering? I've looked into a few branches. They seem rather different and possibly adopt different assumptions in the underlying models. This software holds a lot of promise and I would love to learn how to use it properly, as well as contributing if needs arise.

The answers to this question that I could find are at least several months old and the docs no longer seem up to date. Please help!
