On the page "Write Gauge specifications" there is a sentence:

"Data (Objects) can be shared in steps defined in different classes at runtime using DataStores exposed by Gauge."

but there is no such thing as a "class" in gauge. Please use some gauge idea here to be more specific.

This refers to the "class" in the step implementation, DataStores are "under the hood" implementation detail only visible to the implementation in a programming language. Hope that clarifies the intent - feel free to suggest a better language (or even send a pull request that explains this better).
