Convex Auth docs detail the tradeoffs between various sign-in methods, weighing DX and UX against security. Between OAuth, Magic Links & OTPs, and traditional passwords, no login method emerges as the clear winner.

On the other hand...

A passkey is a new way to sign in that works completely without passwords. By using the security capabilities of your devices like Touch ID and Face ID, passkeys are way more secure and easier to use than both passwords and all current 2-factor authentication (2FA) methods.

The industry has been moving toward passkeys for authentication, as illustrated in this WWDC24 video. Passkeys offer single-click sign-on without any of the traditional phishing vulnerabilities, providing stellar UX and security.

Here is a list of major websites and apps which support passkeys.

It'd be great if Convex Auth could add support for this emerging standard!
