Does it make sense to also update layer groups ?

Since the fields (e.g. metadataUrl) are not managed in the same way for layergroups and layers (layers are associated with a resource object in GeoServer, layergroups nest all the information about themselves), and to my knowledge, gsconfig does not implement metadataUrl modifications on layergroups yet.

Layers groups should be updated by the same way as layers. All attributes necessary seems to be the same: Title, Abstract and Attribution
