There are different processes available under specific circumstances.

+ Apply for urgent processing
+ Urgent processing is available in some circumstances. However, the minimum processing time is 3 weeks. Even if you qualify for urgent processing, we can’t guarantee you’ll get your card on time.

+ Apply on paper, if you can't apply online
+ If you can’t apply online and need accommodations, including for accessibility, you can apply on paper.

+ Complete additional forms and upload them to the portal
+
+ Complete the Document checklist [IMM 5644] and upload it to the portal.
+ Depending on your circumstances, you may need to download, complete, and upload other forms to support your application.

+ You’re using a representative
+

+ You’re updating the gender identifier on your card
+
+

+ You’re reclaiming an Indigenous name

+ Pay your fees, then upload the receipt to the portal

+ - Pay your fee online with IRCC.
+ - Upload your receipt to the Fee Payment section in the Permanent Residence Portal to show that you have paid.

+ Refunds are not possible while the application is in progress.

Change or update your name
+
If only part of your name appears on your card
+
The names on your PR card need to match your foreign passport. But there’s limited space for names on a PR card. We may shorten your name to make it fit on the card.
+
+
For cards issued on or after November 21, 2015, there’s space for:
+
+ - 28 letters or less for first names
+ - 28 letters or less for last names
+
+
+
For cards issued before November 21, 2015, there’s space for:
+
+ - 15 letters or less for first names
+ - 20 letters or less for last names
+
+
+
If we shorten your name, it’s not a mistake. We won’t update your PR card if this is the case.
+
+
Legal name changes
+
If you have legally changed your name or have a name change after a marriage or divorce, you can apply for a PR card.
+
1. Start your application in the Permanent Residence Portal
In the portal, begin your application by filling out the application for a permanent resident card (IMM 5444).
