Right now I can modify PKGMAN_CustomPackageDir but this is an undocumented hack, isn't it?

One way to do this would be to allow specifying a package dir as an optional argument to the various commands.

Another way (not mutually exclusive with the version) would be to add "official" getter/setter functions to change the "default" package dir.
