RHEL distributions

All the distributions listed on this page are either in the Red Hat ecosystem

  • The package format is RPM
  • The package managers are YUM or DNF

The most popular distributions on the page are

  • Fedora
  • RHEL

All the the following distros are part of the RHEL ecosystem

  • Fedora Popular
    • This is the free testing ground upstream of RHEL
    • Gnome DE just like Ubuntu
    • Linus Torvalds uses Fedora for himself and his family
    • I tested this distro, it works very well and seems mature and refined, but I would not use it unless I needed to operate within the Red Hat environment because I am more familiar with Debian/Ubuntu.
    • Fedora Spins
      • Spins provide all the other desktop environments
      • If I needed to operate in the Red Hat RPM world, I would happily select the Fedora KDE Plasma spin
    • Fedora Kinoite
      • Immutable desktop that uses KDE Plasma DE
      • This is a very interesting distro
  • CentOS Stream
    • Rolling distribution
    • Midstream between Fedora and RHEL
    • New distro as of 2020 December after Red Hat killed off CentOS
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux - POPULAR
    • Oldest Linux Distro #4 after SUSE
    • Highly stable
    • USA
    • The world leader in enterprise server and cloud linux
    • Purchased by IBM as of 2019
      • This does not make them evil
    • This may be the best Linux server and workstation OS
    • Can get a free version
  • CentOS (Community Enterprise Operating System)
    • EOL as of 2020 December
    • The free and non-supported exact version of RHEL
  • Rocky Linux
    • Copy of RHEL
  • Alma Linux
    • Copy of RHEL
  • ClearOS
    • Copy of RHEL
  • Qubes OS
    • Focused on security
    • Downstream of Fedora
    • Offered with Purism and NovaCustom laptops
  • Yellow Dog Linux
    • EOL
    • Downstream of RHEL
    • Was my first Linux distro that actually worked, I used it from 1999-2002 on my Apple iMac G3
