If one is somewhat familiar with a language but not entirely competent with it, it could he helpful to see both that language and one's native language subtitles at the same time. If learning a new language, having 2 or even more could be helpful. Three could help where a language has multiple scripts (Chinese characters + Pinyin + English/Spanish/Whatever natieve language) as well (and, of course, would have to be available in the subtitles files/metadata).
