The "end goal" is a grid view on the subscriptions, search (possibly other tabs as well) that allows for faster scrolling through content available and therefore faster finding what the user is interested in/looking for by making the available screenspace being used more efficiently.
The problem right now is that the screenspace available is used highly inefficiently by the list view and therefore finding new videos of the channels subscribed to (if more than maybe 5) is cumbersone and lengthy. The problem shows especially on tablets.
Proposal
There should be a third option (besides List and Preview) for how the subscriptions tab and others (e.g. search) can be viewed: Grid view.
Current state of the subscription tab that is very user-unfriendly, inefficient and wasteful of screenspace:
What it should be like (as example a screenshot of the What's New tap in Newpipe that is equivalent to GrayJay's Subscription tab:
I think the benefits of a grid view cannot be denied with the screenshots provided for comparison.
The grid could be custom by user choice (tiles per line/column), selectable from multiple options (e.g. 3, 4, 5, 6 tiles per line) or automatically adapted to the screen's resolution with fixed tile size.
On the Fire HD 10 Plus tablet on which the screenshots were taken, which has a 10.1" 1920x1200 screen a 5x3 grid seems perfect. Instead of 5 videos with NewPipe's grid view I can select from 15 videos at once - hence 3x less scrolling necessary to find the videos I want to watch.
I urge you to please consider adding a grid view option as a feature of the next version with how big of a quality of life improvement it is.
