Is it possible to render notes with the dots instead, as in the Pelavicino Codex? Because they were done collaboratively by the students, they are all out of numerical order, and all the more so when students reused the same note for common things (e.g. omissions). The dot seems a big more elegant, at least for our texts.

After a few tests, I can confirm that the unnumbered comment note exponent (a square with rounded angles, aubergine color) is a bit bulky, perhaps we could go back to a dot, possibly larger than the old one to make it a better target? same color than comment notes exponent but lower, mid-line position.
