How do you index on a non-primary field?

So, I'm trying to understand how you can index on a standard field.

For example, a model is:
truck_id
contents_in_truck

There is a one to many relationship between truck_id and contents_in_truck. How do you index the truck_id? It can't be primary and can't be unique.
