To group the categories in "subcategories"

I find confusing to have in the list of categories items like diseases (i.e. hiv, lassa...), countries (i.e. Niger...) and type of project (i.e. study, trial, surveillance...). it would be nice to create subcategories and list them in alfabetic order within subcategories.

We're using quarto to build this site which automatically generates the categories list based on the categories we add to each item in a YAML listing. Unfortunately there is no built in option to have subcategories. It's something we could look into achieving with a custom HTML template but I'm not sure how feasible this is or how long it would take so we will most likely be stuck with the single categories list for now.
