If you're sitting in a room and refresh Riot, the fragment persists as #/room/#whatever:domain.com. If domain.com goes down prior to your refresh, when Riot comes back it says #whatever:domain.com is unavailable at this time`, however I can click the room in my room list and access it just fine.
Steps to reproduce
Requires 2 homeservers.
In a room, set the canonical alias to be on homeserver2
On homeserver1's account, go to the room
Bring down homeserver2
Refresh the page for homeserver1's user
I'd suspect the same failure occurs when changing the fragment directly, instead of having to do a full page reload.
