I'm seeing the same issue. As you mention, this happens if the search interface has been opened at least once and then closed.

Workaround is to click the 'i' button which shows the same panel.

The affected (legacy) room header is on its way out. The new room header will be on by default as of the upcoming release so it is unlikely this will get fixed for the legacy header.

I tested this on 3 computers (Ubuntu 22.04 + Debian 12) with Element Desktop v1.11.72, which appears to have the Room Header beta enabled (I see a 'Leave the beta' button):

  • Ctrl+F (enabled in preferences) does nothing (may work the first time but subsequent attempts to search does nothing despite restarting the app)
  • I don't see a search button

Would be nice if Ctrl-F works instantly again.

The legacy room header is gone, so this issue is no longer
