v8.0.1 (2022-Oct-18):

• Increased API polling from 1s to 2s. Track changes may reflect slightly slower. This change was made due to Snip getting rate limited by Spotify.
• Changed it so that if Snip does hit the rate limit that it won't reset and cause duplicate entries in the history file.

v8.0.0 (2022-Oct-08):

• Improved callback handler for Spotify authentication. It should work much more reliably and consistent.
• Removed local Spotify player detection completely. Snip now relies on all information provided by the web API. This allows much more reliable and accurate detection of what's playing. Additionally, a benefit of this is that you can play Spotify from any device or computer and Snip will detect it.
• Local songs in Spotify will display their information correctly. However, album artwork is not supported by the Spotify API and will not work.
• Added a blank "No Player" option before Spotify and iTunes. This allows Snip to run without requiring you to sign into Spotify first. This is useful for users only wishing to use it for iTunes. After initial launch right-click on the tray icon and choose your player. NOTE: After selecting player if you switch between players multiple times Snip will not detect updates anymore.

v7.0.5 (2019-Sep-15):

• Made Spotify detection substantially better. Due to Windows API limits you cannot get the main window handle from a process minimized to the system tray. With this version Snip will only need to see the Spotify window one time and it will work from then on until you restart Spotify.

• Changed timer from 5 seconds back to 1 second. However Snip now uses the titlebar of Spotify to determine when tracks change and will only fetch new data when the titlebar changes. This ultimately cuts down on API calls significantly.
• Fixed issue where podcasts and non-track information would crash Snip. Spotify does not provide any data on podcasts unfortunately.

• Reduced the API call rate from 1 second to 5 seconds. There may be up to a five second delay when a track changes before Snip detects it but it will significantly reduce the amount of API calls happening.
• Implemented API call retry when rate limit exceeded.

• Brought Spotify code up to date. You will have to authorize your account.
• Removed all media player support except Spotify and iTunes. (I don't have the time to maintain all of the code for all of the media players. I'm sorry about that. Perhaps with a rewrite I can make Snip modular and other people can maintain their own plugins.)
• Polished up code some and removed a lot of unused code.
• Tested against iTunes 12.9.5.7 (non-Windows Store version).
• Tested against Spotify 1.1.10.540.gfcf0430f (non-Windows Store version.)

If a new feature or option were added that would break compatibility it will force Snip to bump up to the next major version. I also removed my name from the registry path so it will now just be located under Snip.
• Fixed possible uppercase/lowercase issues based on user's locale setting.
• Added Quod Libet player support (Support added by Jay Lapham).
• Changed Spotify player check behavior. If it can't connect to the local web service it will now show that Spotify is not running.

• #101 #101 When Snip queries Spotify's servers for track information it will now use the result with the highest "popularity" rating. This change hopefully will result in more accurate track selection.
• #100 #100 Cleaned up Spotify artwork downloading. It will now download the files provided in the main JSON file instead of downloading the JSON for the embedded site and then using the images linked there. This potentially will result in less blank artwork.

• Fix for crash when using Spotify and a song title had a / in it. This was caused by Spotify's API not liking the use of a /. I now replaced the / with a space in code and it's worked on all songs I've tested so far. This fixes #91 #91.

• JSON is now downloaded as UTF8. This will fix an issue where non-standard characters were showing up wrong.
• Added the ability to use $n in the output format. This will add a newline wherever used.
• Changed the way VLC was detected and the text handled. This should fix problems people using VLC in a different language were having.
• Added the ability for Snip to check if there's a new version available. If a new version is found then the place where Snip shows the current version in the context menu will be replaced with text showing a new version is available. You can click this text to open your web browser to download the new version.
• Feel free to update translation files and/or submit new languages.

• Caught exception when ws.spotify.com couldn't be resolved. This fixes #10 #10 by catching the exception thrown when ws.spotify.com could not be resolved. In the case the name cannot be resolved then a blank image will be saved in its place.
• Remove unnecessary code related to saving album artwork to disk. Hopefully this fixes #9 #9.

• Added the ability to select album artwork resolution for Spotify. The default size is Tiny since you really shouldn't need much larger for displaying the image on your stream. However, the choice is there.
  • Tiny = 60x60
  • Small = 120x120
  • Medium = 300x300
  • Large = 640x640
• Strip " - Explicit Album Version" from song titles as it messes up the search results.
• Rather than take the first result provided from the search with Spotify it will now loop through the results until it finds a title that matches what's playing. Results are still not 100% because the song title shown inside Spotify isn't always the result you get with their search.
• StyleCop dropped in favor of Code Analysis built in to MSVC.
• Unused code removed.
• Memory leaks fixed.
• Globalization support added to make it easy to translate and use in languages other than English. (Feel free to e-mail me about this).

• Snip will download higher resolution album artwork using a more efficient method. This patch was provided by Kailan Blanks. Thank you.
• Added an option to cache Spotify album artwork locally. If this option is enabled then it will download and save the artwork locally to a separate directory, and then each time that track is played it will use the saved artwork instead of redownloading it.
• Due to the contribution I added an AUTHORS.txt file.
• Split structs and classes into regions.
• I forced the download timeout to 5 seconds so that there's not too much of a wait between the time the album artwork starts downloading and the text file is updated.

• Changed the way album artwork and track information are discovered with Spotify. It no longer tries to get the exact track ID within Spotify's memory. It will now query the Spotify API on the web using the artist name and track title. If a match is found it will pull the track ID from there and then query the regular Spotify HTML page for artwork.
• The change above allowed me to remove a lot of unnecessary code, including ReadProcessMemory(), GetWindowThreadProcessId(), and FindInMemory().
• Removed some unused WindowMessage commands.

• Changed the readonly values to consts and renamed them.
• Embedded the blank image as a byte array instead of having a separate Snip_Blank.jpg.
• Created a SaveBlankImage() method that saves the blank image in case of any error.
• Changed the way I get Spotify album artwork. It now uses the regular Spotify HTML page instead of the embed page. This provides a lower resolution image than previously but it works.
• Added a ImageFromByteArray() method that converts a byte array to an Image.

  • If you save the track and artist information to separate files then make sure the separator that you use does NOT appear in any track or artist title. If it does then the text will not get separated correctly.
