According to the Loi portant orientation du Système Éducatif Tchadien:
Article 21.- Basic education is compulsory.
Article 23.- Basic education is organised into two cycles:
- Primary education;
- Intermediate education.
Article 25.- Primary education is provided in primary schools open to children from six (6) to twelve (12) years of age, focusing on the basic skills of writing, reading and arithmetic in the official languages. It is also provided in the national languages.
