There have been several discussions about adding a status field for e.g., planned, ongoing or 'failed' experiments, and also for the status of equipment, e.g., working, broken, being fixed, defunct or not being fixed.
These could be added at the Item level with different possible states depending on the underlying type, then displayed in the various item tables as well as on the item pages themselves.

It would also be really nice to track this state/status over time in another field that stores (timestamp, state) (and probably the person that changed the state).
I imagine quite a lot of thought will need to go into what the possible states are for each item type, and these may need to be configurable. Probably we can come up with just a handful of "classes" of states, e.g., planned, active, completed, failed and then have customisable offshoots from those.
