By integrating key economic components—including population dynamics, government budget constraints, taxation mechanisms, consumption behavior, labor market interactions, production functions, and inflation dynamics—we assessed the feasibility and potential impacts of implementing UBI under various scenarios.
The simulation results indicate that:
- Economic Feasibility: UBI implementation is economically feasible but requires careful planning to manage fiscal impacts. Gradual implementation and thoughtful funding strategies can mitigate potential negative effects on government debt and economic growth.
- Positive Social Outcomes: UBI has the potential to significantly reduce poverty rates and income inequality, improving overall social welfare.
- Manageable Labor Market Effects: The anticipated reduction in labor supply due to the income effect is modest, suggesting that UBI may not substantially discourage workforce participation.
- Holistic Modeling Approach: The model advances the existing literature by providing a holistic framework that captures the interplay between various economic factors in the context of UBI implementation.
- Empirical Calibration: By calibrating the model with empirical data, the study enhances the reliability of the simulations and provides insights grounded in real-world conditions.
- Policy-Relevant Insights: The findings offer valuable guidance for policymakers considering UBI as a tool to address economic challenges such as automation-induced job displacement and income inequality.
While the study provides meaningful insights, several limitations should be acknowledged:
- Simplifying Assumptions: The model's assumptions, such as a closed economy and constant parameters, may not fully capture the complexity of the real-world economy.
- Behavioral Responses: The model simplifies behavioral responses to UBI, and actual human behavior may differ due to a variety of socio-economic factors.
- Data Constraints: Some parameters rely on estimates or historical data that may not reflect future trends or unforeseen economic shifts.
- Expanded Modeling: Future studies could incorporate open economy dynamics, sector-specific analyses, and more sophisticated behavioral economics to enhance model accuracy.
- Longitudinal Studies: Conducting long-term empirical research, including monitoring actual UBI pilot programs, would provide valuable data to refine the model.
- Interdisciplinary Approaches: Collaborating with sociologists, psychologists, and other experts can help explore the broader societal impacts of UBI beyond economic indicators.
The exploration of Universal Basic Income through a detailed mathematical model offers a promising avenue for understanding its potential effects on the economy and society. While challenges exist, the potential benefits of UBI in promoting economic security and reducing inequality merit serious consideration. This study serves as a foundation for further research and dialogue on the viability of UBI as a policy instrument in the USA.
