Description

Open ClipArt search no longer returns results, just advertisements

Expectation

Search engines should return meaningful results (CC licensed works). As Open ClipArt no longer supports CC licensed content in their search, it should be removed.

After testing the open clipart search, I noticed that after clicking on next page a couple of times, we finally get to see the content for our search

My suggestion would be not to remove Open Clipart completely but to make it a lower-priority search engine since the ads interrupt the user experience

The point of pulling up a search is to get results... If results don't yield then users are not satisfied....

That's true but there may be users who specifically want to see content from Open ClipArt since every site would have its own unique content. And moreover, users who already frequent the Open ClipArt site may know their way around the ads as I indicated and so removing the engine altogether will remove a load of content Open ClipArt comes with. That's why I feel making it less prioritized may be more suitable.

@dullbenz okay I get you now... At the end the only priority search engine is openverse as @TimidRobot made emphasis on it

To clarify, I think the point of what @TimidRobot said, was that Openverse should be emphasized in some way, not that it should be the only engine given consideration of inclusion.

On how to approach this engine staying or going, it is more or less related to this comment from @TimidRobot :

Off the top of my head, these are the considerations I can think of and how I would rank them:

  1. Quality of results
    • Correct license / legal tool identification
    • Ability to select license / legal tool
    • Attribution example or guidance
  2. Quantity of results
  3. Ethics / how supportive of open knowledge is the owner of the search engine
  4. Stability of API / query strings
  5. Donations / Royalties
  6. Adoption / Popularity

What am I missing? Would you prioritize them differently?

I think it worth mentioning on #112 what dimension of UX interruption via Ads might need consideration as it relates to the conversation already going on there.

I would say until that set of criteria is decided, it might make sense to block this Issue since whether this stays or goes could be directly related.

@possumbilities since the search engine still gives results on search, from my perspective, removing or making it less prior to others wouldn’t be needed nevertheless as you said the dimension of UX interruption via Ads that might need consideration should be mentioned in #112
