Can't get watchtower 1.7.1 to update any outdated containers although it does run regularly

I am running a watchtower instance in a one node swarm and portainer. I can see the watchtower container doing its checks, but no image is ever updated. The end result doesn't say that anything failed either, but outdated containers aren't updated and restarted with the new image.

What am I missing? How do I get watchtower to do its thing?

This is the docker-compose.yml for the watchtower container deployed as a stack:

I think it was my mistake: I discovered later that watchtower doesn't work with swarm IIRC.

I've encountered this problem too. But I'm using pure docker
