this was beautifully solved in #108 but keeping this issue as a reminder to also add optional exercises in R (see #117 )

exercises in test-design are now available in python, julia, fortran and c++, but need to translate to R
I think apart from the end-to-end test examples, which are still Python only, all tests design exercises now have an R version since #212 was merged
