Will X12 work with any microstep stepper driver?

I'm interested in driving a single X27 stepper smoothly, would the X12 library be compatible with a (for ex) DRV8428?

At a glance I think the X12 library will work with the drv8428 since the basic step interface looks to be the same as the X12.017. That's a pretty fancy driver chip. It looks like it might be a good solution for achieving low noise which is something people ask about a lot. I'd love to hear how you go with it.
