Newbie - stuck on git submodules

I do the git submodule update
but it can't find 2nd dependency.
I manually download and throw in files -
and project builds - but then I'm stuck on this screen - it's like I've got the wrong branch...
I press two fingers down - and it starts the text edit / keyboard - I try 2 fingers - but no joy.
Is there a specific commit for submodule I need to get it working?
