There seems to be some missing files in the samples provided like .mdf file. Also I am not able to find any documentation on how it works. Can you please help.

The local SQL server stuff creates that for you automatically. There was nothing to check in as it is does not reside in the project. Try messing with the web.config settings to get this to work. It's a pretty typical ASP.NET demo project feature.
