New to Chi Hack Night? Want to see how you can get involved?

This is the place for you!

This is a short orientation to civic technology. We'll go over why we build, share, and learn about civic tech, what resources are available at hack night, and some examples of our work. Afterwards, we'll do a short activity looking at the various breakout groups here that anyone can get involved with. We'll explore the following questions:

  1. What problems are they trying to solve, and what data sources (if any) are they using?
  2. How are they keeping their work relevant to the community?
  3. What tools they are using day-to-day?

Where do you meet?
In the main post-breakout Zoom

Hello there!

Chi Hack Night wants to experiment with a new way of announcing of breakout groups and we could use your help! Here's the idea:

Currently, announcements for breakout groups are based off this semi-static list on the Chi Hack Night website. We'd like to try a more dynamic format using a list of GitHub issues like this one, which will allow breakout group leaders like yourself to more easily edit the written description of your projects so you can tailor it towards the skillsets you look to recruit from week to week.

Here's what you can do:

Add an issue to this repo for your project. If you can, follow the example in Issue #1, which has four sections broken out "About the group", "Who we're looking for", "Tools", and "Where we meet". You can also use the "labels" feature to tag your project as beginner-friendly or as in need of certain skillsets. We'll present this list of issues (hopefully in a more visually appealing format, Derek is working on that) next week and you can present concisely as normal.

Confused. Which is the spreadsheet that has the data you wanted to see visualizations created on?

Hi All,

I'm new to Chi Hack, however, I have lived in Chicago for the better part of 7 years and work to visualize data around health statistics and am very excited to start using the open city data.

Here is a link to some of the work I do

We are a nonprofit group looking to participate in civic hack event as we have some issues with our current platforms to serve nonprofits that we need help solving. Is this the group that can help? (we are in Chicago and our organization is at givenkind.org)

Hi I'm Trisha.

I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a community focus and a government & healthcare background. Love what you guys are doing! I know my knowledge and skill base would blend well with this organization but not exactly sure where or how to get started.

I am also here to learn more about the fields you all work in and how it can increase and improve service delivery to marginalized communities. I have little to no coding experience but have some informatics in my background. A friend recommended that I learn python. Any recommendations are welcome.

Looking forward to getting more involved. Thanks!
