Quarterly Newsletter - October 2022
Hello napari community!
We’re excited to share the fall quarterly newsletter to keep our community up to date on all things plugins and the hub. Check out the new section, Community Opportunities, below to find out ways to get involved with the hub.
Community Opportunities
Swag for Plugin Developers
We’re thanking all plugins developers with a swag box to show our appreciation for their contributions to the napari community. Haven’t heard from us yet? We’re sorry we missed you! Please reach out to Dannielle McCarthy to sign up for a swag box.
Share your Favorite Plugins for the Plugin Collections Launch
Share useful, awesome, and interesting plugins to the napari community! We’re preparing to launch Plugin Collections to help community members share their favorite plugins, and we’re collecting submissions for the initial launch.
Here are some ideas for Collections for inspiration:
To submit a Collection, you can follow the instructions here to submit a Collection directly to the Collections Github repo, or reach out to Dannielle McCarthy for help with the submission. We encourage everyone in our community to submit a Collection to help others find useful plugins to try.
Tell Us About Yourself
To inform the content of these newsletters, we’d love to hear more about your interests. We aim to cater our content to our subscribers, so please take 1-2 minutes to tell us about yourselves in this anonymous survey.
What's New on the Hub
Launched Features
Learn More about a Plugin from New Metadata on Plugin pages
We’ve added additional metadata on the Plugin pages left sidebar. Learn about what data types work with a plugin and if the plugin contains a widget, data writer, sample data, and more! You can also utilize filters for this metadata on our homepage left sidebar.
Are you a Plugin developer? You can add a “human-readable” display name to your Plugin’s metadata!
napari hub Wiki
We just launched a wiki for the napari hub with guides for plugin developers and details about the hub architecture.
New Plugins to Check Out
We’ve had over 30 new Plugins released this quarter! We’ve featured a few below, but you can check them all out on the napari hub using the Newest button on the left sidebar Sort.
napari-segment by Andrey Aristov
Plugin for segmenting organoids and measuring their intensities
napari-bleach-correct by Alexander Marx
Plugin for correcting for photobleaching in time-lapse images.
napari-filament-annotator by Anna Medyukhina
Plugin for annotating filaments / curvilinear structures in 3D.
Want to add a new feature or share a new analysis method with the community? Contribute a plugin to napari! Start with this presentation and tutorial. Check out the napari Plugin developer workshop series archive for even more info about creating high-quality plugins.
What’s Next on the hub?
Upcoming Features
Plugin Collections for Discovering and Sharing Plugins
We’re streamlining Plugin discovery and sharing by adding community-curated Plugin Collections that group plugins together in ways not captured by the current categories or other plugin metadata. Check out below the design mockups of the Collection overview and Collection in-detail pages, and get excited about curating your own Plugin Collection for the initial launch or after Collections are added to the hub.
Activity Dashboard to Give Insights into Plugin Quality
Wondering how many others in the community are using a plugin? Curious about how the plugin developers are maintaining their plugin? Soon the hub will have public activity dashboards to help users learn about metrics related to plugin quality. Check out the mockups below and look out for this feature in the coming months!
We hope y’all are as excited about these new additions and upcoming features on the hub as we are, and we are so excited to support and expand our community!
As always, you can check out our roadmap to see what we’re working on and look in our Github repository for more info.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
