Several hovering/selection mode could be enabled by pressing a specific key:

Hover only the nearest source/footprint. If 2 are at the same distance, hover both of them
Hover sources/footprints within a specific radius around the mouse. Radius is to be determined
Hover sources/footprints that contain the mouse

The first two can be easily implemented with the default one being the first and the second one being enabled by pressing shift.
