With Stacks coming in Mohave beta, what can we do? #14
Comments
I am very interested in further development of BumpTop as well. @slackmoehrle, Perhaps we can collaborate. |
Yeah. Sounds great. What ideas do you have? I have some ideas for a seamless integration into the Finder. |
My first step will be to get this compiling and running on 10.14 |
So you're planning to focus on Mac? or are you thinking Windows & Mac?
In my experience, i found that the Windows version has more features... But
the mac version has the benefit of running on the smoother MacOS UI.
I actually have been developing a 3D Operating System of my own in Unity.
It currently runs on top of Windows and makes everyday computing feel more
like a video game. With that said, I'm interested in using Bumptop as a
tool within my OS.
***Further, depending on the licensing options, i'd be curious to see if
it's smarter to rebuild the functionality from scratch using 2018
technology. Especially since interactive 3D animations are easier than ever
using a tool like Unity or Unreal.
As the world transitions into 3D computing, i think bumptop can be
particularly useful as a tool to help people organize all the files they've
collected in the last 20 years. In my opinion, traditional mac and windows
GUIs can no longer keep up with the sheer number of files, apps, media, and
sites that are packed into a computer...
The files in my computer would fill up a warehouse, yet, i can only look at
1 or 2 files at a time through a small rectangular screen. *** Tools like
Bumptop and my 3DOS are becoming necessary to solve this problem.

Hi, I've bought BumpTop a few weeks before Google took over them. Working with BumpTop (last official version) on my Mac every single day. But from OS X Sierra it is worse and worse. :( If somebody do new version for Mohave, I'm willing to test it. Is any newer version of classic BumpTop available? 64bit. :) @jmassion Do you have your 3D Operating system working? Can I see it somewhere? Sounds interesting. It's pity that it's not for Mac. I'd like to try it. |
Hi Moren,
If you'd like to contact me on Skype we can have a conversation and I'll
show you a quick sample of my system.
I have a feeling it will be smarter and easier to design a new bumptop like
experience from scratch and just use the bumptop source code as a guide on
how to effect the desktop and file layer of Mac OS.

Hey all, this is Anand creator of BumpTop and it is so cool to see folks on here actively chatting about it! Although I don't have time to help at the moment (very busy with www.spatial.is where you will find a lot of the BumpTop ideas taken into augmented reality, launching later this year), I am happy to help if there is any way to. For example, handing over admin to folks who seem interested/capable of taking the project further. Warms my hear to see these comments though! Love you all 😍 Warmly, |
BumpTop in Mojave is working except the issue where you can't delete file. Of course a few other issues as well. :( Now it's not a pleasure work with it and really it needs to upgrade. But still it's much better than Stacks. I had to switch to DesktopShelves app, which has better way to operate with desktop than Stacks, but miles behind the BumpTop usability. Is there somebody who is trying bring even basic BumpTop into the Mojave? |
I started looking at the issues a few days ago. I wasn't sure if the community was active at all or if I was just doing this out of curiosity. |
It's extremely welcome. :) Did you find solution? |
I'm literally scared to update Mojave because of this. BumpTop is still a must have for me after all of these years. |
I definitelly understand. Any progres with a new version? |
I think best thing to do would be first submit a pull request with your
changes.

@MorenXXL <https://github.com/MorenXXL> actually I wanted to ask @anandx
<https://github.com/anandx> if I could take this repo over and start
cranking on some things with Mohave being the first goal. I'm loading up
Mohave and Xcode 10 on spare hardware. Its become sort of risky to do this
on my main daily machine :-)

I'll continue working on them :-) |
Any progress? :) |
I have Saturday blocked out to work on this. |
Any further updates, @slackmoehrle? |
Sent with GitHawk |
I'm also waiting for the update. Desktop is one of my must have app. |
@slackmoehrle Hi, any progress with DeskTop for Catalina or so? :) |
If we could at least stop it from requesting permission each time it needs to write to the FS that would be great. I'm just dealing with it. *I did survive the update however. |
That's true. Basic function and compatibility with new MacOS is what I personally need. :) And I believe most of us, daily users. :) |
I think I'm close to Catalina compatibility. |
Why about getting away from X11...any thoughts on how this would be received? |
X11? |
yes, what id we moved away from it being a dependency? |
I'm lost. :) That question is not for me to reply. :) |
well, I was fixing the file system permission issues last night and I got to thinking that BT requires X11 to be installed, IIRC. |
I see. :) If you can get it working without it, I think it will be ok. :) |
Is anyone running Catalina, 10.15 |
Not yet. :( |
Thanks, I'm getting an error I haven't seen before since updating to Xcode 11 and Catalina Beta 9
|
Good morning to all. Sorry for the interruption. I have read and seen that you followed the bumptop programming. I have always been a user, and currently I still use it on a surface pro 6. Catalina is related to it? Can I get a version to install it? please. Regards. |
Catalina is the new macOS system that will be released asap. |
@slackmoehrle |
Hello everyone, I would be interested in helping idea-wise with several parts of this project. I was wanting to implement Linux support and start helping with fixing the issues everyone is having. It is super cool to see everyone supporting this project, but I think we could make something seriously impressive with this (more impressive than it already is) and with seeing concepts like Opera Neon one could make a desktop environment for Linux that feels like the pure future. I would like to help idea-wise as much as possible, but unfortunately almost all the code is going over my head. |
That would be awesome. Pushing it even further, making it lightweight and runable on integrated GPUs would be awesome. BumpTop still runs on Mojave, the OS I keep running on my system, but the impact on the system is noticeable. Had you managed to compile a runnable fork @slackmoehrle? |
With Stacks coming in Mohave beta, what can we do to ramp up this projects use. Long time fan from the 10.5 days and I still feel I could code up some kick ass functionality!
