How Do I Get the Smart Chat Conversations Feature to work with My "local" Notes Like It Used To? #64

I discovered and installed the Smart Connections plugin (v2.2.85) during the last week of November 2024. It worked great. I also installed the Smart Connections Visualizer plugin. It worked great, too.

The Smart Chat Conversations feature was a huge unexpected benefit of installing the Smart Connections plugin.

PROBLEM:

After updating the Smart Connections plugin from v2.2.85 to either v2.3.37 or v2.3.39, the Smart Chat Conversations feature stopped working. I was no longer able to chat with my thousands of "local" Obsidian notes.

The Smart Connections view feature and the companion Smart Connections Visualizer plugin still seem to work properly.

I noticed that both the Smart Connections and the Smart Chat Conversation settings had changed.

Smart Connections Settings

  • The Smart Connections settings Smart Sources section now has a setting for an “Embedding Model Platform” (default = “Transformers”), and the “GPU Batch Size” setting has been removed.
  • The Smart Connections settings Smart Blocks section now has a setting for a “Minimum length of entity to embed” (default = 300).
  • The Smart Connections settings Smart Chat section has been removed.

Smart Chat Conversation Settings

  • Settings for "Review Context", Lookup Limit", "Send Tool Output in User Message", "Chat Model", and Refresh Models" were added.

I had hoped the plugin’s recent updates might fix the problem I am experiencing. But, the problem still persists.

FYI:

  • I searched for how to fix my problem, but found no references to my problem.
  • I use six(6) vaults: personal info, Obsidian testing, a science and technology PKM, government and politics blogging, and one each for 2 books in process.
  • All of these vaults reside within a folder on Dropbox for syncing between my 32 GB MacMini M2 Pro and my MS Surface Pro. Surprisingly, it all works.
  • The Smart Chat Conversations feature still works for my vaults using Smart Connections v2.2.85.

Hi @heckj516 and thanks for the detailed report.

Make sure the updated version is on the latest version, then try the "Clear all & re-import" button in the settings. That should fix any issues caused by changes in the data structures since earlier versions.

If that doesn't work, then there should be errors in the developer console logs that might help give us an idea what's going on. If you can screenshot those that would be a good help in figuring out the issue.

Hi Brian

I installed version 2.3.47

While I do have an OpenAI API key, I would prefer the local chat option.

Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to configure the local chat settings. The documentation on https://docs.smartconnections.app/Smart-Chat/Chat-Settings doesn't mirror the options I see under Smart Threads Settings.

Which console information would be helpful for you to help debugging?

BTW, I sync my .md files via Google Drive so I can use them on several laptops and a smartphone. I hope that's not a show stopper.
