For the uninitiated, it is difficult to understand that the user needs to include the markup [bibtex] or [bibcite] in the content of the page for the plugin to work.

Why not update the documentation to say at the very beginning:

To use the plugin, simply edit the content of any page and include the special markup
[bibtex group=year group_order=desc show_links=1]
to include a bibliography.

I suspect this is the most common scenario: an author wants to include the list of his publication, by year. This may be obvious to the developers and long time users, but the beginner would benefit from this, IMHO.
