https://github.com/ofajardo/pyreadr is a package to read RData and Rds files. This is much more lightweight than the rpy2 package and may cover the functionality we need. It appears to be stable in terms of its interface so we are less at the mercy of updates as well.

This isn't an option until pyreadr is able to read matrices correctly. I'll leave this open as a reminder to check again in a few months.

Seems that the issue with matrices was eventually fixed, see here: ofajardo/pyreadr#5 (comment). We should look into this at some point. Seems like a much lighter approach to dealing with RData than the entire r2py ecosystem.
