GPIO12 (distance sensor) breaks flashing #1

The board cannot be flashed correctly when the distance sensor is connected, because GPIO12 is a strapping pin (MTDI).

Maybe swap it with SDA or SCL?

It appears that GPIO12 can be freed up by setting the permanent fuse:
