I intended to open this PR to share what I have worked on with anyone who may be interested in applying for GSoC with the astrowidget idea this year. But I can work more on it if needed. |

To contribute some preliminary work for using Matplotlib as a backend for astrowidgets. Version currently quite sketchy and needs patching to add more functionalities.
