If you are looking for the most minimal setup of python environments or projects

using rye

1. create a directory

mkdir my-app && cd my-app

2. setup an environment with your choice of python

rye init --script --min-py 3.10 --py 3.10.13 --virtual --no-pin --no-readme --private --quiet

you get a git repo, virtual environment, and pyproject.toml

$ ls -a                    
.git  .gitignore  .venv  pyproject.toml

3. create requirements* aka lock files

rye sync

you get 2 more files

$ ls -a
.git  .gitignore  .venv  pyproject.toml  requirements-dev.lock  requirements.lock

get even more minimal using uv

1. create a directory

mkdir my-app && cd my-app

2. select the python version

rye pin 3.11.9

3. ensure that the selected python version is installed

rye fetch

4. create the virtual environment

uv venv

Now, you have the most minimal setup

$ ls -a
.python-version  .venv

5. Install any dependencies

uv pip install jupyterlab
