Make Buffer a Batch

I believe that the complex but powerful functionality implemented in the Batch class could be leveraged to improve the Buffer. In particular, I think the Buffer could be re-implemented as Batch. To enable that, the Batch would have to be extended to include the functionality of the Batch, such as reading and writing a data set/batch/buffer from disk.
