Hinting not working

When I press f, I see the hinting tag on the bottom, but no links get displayed. Not sure how this works. Running on ubuntu 16.04

it's a timing issue with pressing the hinting key before the page has loaded, press escape and then f again to fix

I need to add a check to queue the hinting request on top level gui to delay until late has loaded event
