Hi Alex,
since the demise of Pd-extended there has been an effort to combine the simplicity of vanilla with the ease of use from extended. The result is deken, a GUI plugin that comes with the current vanilla and allows to "find externals" via the Help menu of Pd. They can then be downloaded and installed with one click.
