How to access global variables using the the community toolkit?

In our extension we used to use EnvDTE.Project to access global 'variables'. The snippet inside the project file looks like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
</Project>
  <!-- All unimportant stuff omitted. -->
  <ProjectExtensions>
    <VisualStudio>
      <UserProperties MyProperty="some_value" />
    </VisualStudio>
  </ProjectExtensions>
</Project>

The code that runs on MyProperty may look like this:

EnvDTE.Project project = ...
var globals = project.Globals;
var variableNames = globals.VariableNames as string[];
foreach (var var in variableNames) {
    if (var.StartsWith("MyProperty", StringComparison.Ordinal))
        return globals.VariablePersists[var];
}
return false;

Is there any way to get access to MyProperty using the community toolkit? If not, what interface{s} can I utilize to get the same behavior as before (without using EnvDTE)? Many thanks in advance.
