if Qref or lambda_ref is specified, plot it. if one is passed, plot that instead but print something to inform the user, and if both are None, print error message

to clarify, I believe Troy is referring to a handler function with an explicit naming like with_ref which detects input/output set in discretization, grabs appropriate reference parameter and passes it to associated existing plotting functions.

This is on my to-do list but of relatively low priority. In fact I think it may be a great thing to help one of the other students in our group do as a first contribution. It covers function handles/wrappers, logging, and exceptions... good teaching opportunity.
