settings.json is changed every launch and so no valid copy may be available if the user incorrectly configures the file. Having a reference copy (that the user doesn't) change would alleviate this issue.

The README has instructions on how to set up the JSON. The instructions I wrote on each tracking laptop also have said instructions. If this is not sufficient, I'm more tempted to have the program prompt the user for settings directly on startup. That would take longer but would be less error prone. Thoughts on that instead?

Alternate idea: a configuration script that can be run at any time and generates a properly formatted settings.json
