Some suggestions from Greg:
Two things that you might consider adding:

  • Creating a lab manual. You mention creating written guidelines, but I wonder if there's more that could be said here. Matt Jones once forwarded a wonderful example of a lab manual. What should go in a lab manual? How to organize it? How to assess completeness (tip: when new lab member doesn't understand something, take that as a hint to document it). How to keep it up to date? How to keep the management burden reasonable. Tips for creating triggers to remember that when something changes, the lab manual needs to be updated.

  • Example/case study of good data organization. I'm recalling Anna Ramji's group project from last year was particularly good. Any example will be very specific to that project, perhaps too specific, but perhaps there's a way to highlight or point out what is notable about it.
