In order to improve performance in a goal-oriented way (e.g. #14), we first need a set of benchmarks to measure the difference.

For example, the benchmarks could cover the following scenarios:

Short raw string without any formatting
Short string with basic formatting
Long string with diverse formatting
String with deeply nested formatting
