Upcoming Changes to Hydrogen

Since the developer preview release, we’ve been hard at work finalizing the moving pieces to get us closer to a stable version of Hydrogen. You can see the progress we’ve made to date through our releases.

We know there are a number of users in active development of their Hydrogen storefronts, and while we will continue to release updates to Hydrogen throughout the developer preview with the potential for breaking changes. We are sharing these known major breaking changes in an effort to be as clear and proactive as possible so that you can plan accordingly.

Release Target: Jan 25, 2022

• Changes to React Server Components to adopt Meta’s implementation
  • We’ve been working with Meta’s React team and have aligned on a path forward to adopt their experimental version of React Server Components. This requires changes to our current implementation of RSC. Most notably, we will update Hydrogen to support context in client components only, until we have a stronger alignment on server context.
  • This change will minimize the amount of work required for Hydrogen to adopt the updated version of RSC once it’s out of the experimentation phase. Until then, Hydrogen provides a layer of abstraction through our framework to ensure stability of RSC with client context.
  • As part of this change, Hydrogen inherently does routing, so we’ll also be removing react-router on both the client and the server.

Release Target: Feb 8, 2022

• Separate Hydrogen packages
  • This release will split the project structure into two parts: the Hydrogen framework itself, and a library of components, hooks, and utilities.
  • This will allow the community to leverage the parts of Hydrogen that are relevant to their projects, clarify Hydrogen’s overall project structure, and enable future extensibility.
  • For our initial launch, we are committed to focusing on the integration of both of these packages together, and are not responsible for breaking changes that have downstream impact if using these in combination with other packages.
• Updating our components
  • We’ll be updating the components to reflect the changes to adopting Meta’s version of RSC.
  • We’re also refining our list of available components, hooks and utilities to make it easier to get started with building your commerce storefront. We’ll be sharing an update on the specifics of this soon!
