Which disaster risk or issue are you addressing?

Problem:
Since June 14, 2022, floods in Pakistan have killed 1,486 people. The floods were caused by
heavier than usual monsoon rains and melting glaciers that followed a severe heat wave, all of
which are linked to climate change. It is the world's deadliest flood since the 2017 South Asian
floods[ and described as the worst in the country's history. 33 million people are affected and
displaced up to 100,000 people from their homes. The social activist organizations are trying to
reach out these floods effected areas using boats and other means to help out the people, but they
are numerous unexplored areas where help hasn’t reached till yet due to vast spread of population
and lack of facilities and funds. As the damage is so huge and it’s really challenging to deal with
unlimited challenges of helpless affected people.
Solution:
A Raspberry Pi based fully autonomous drone equipped with OAK – D – Pro Camera (fixed
– Focus) will be flying these areas and checkout if a person is stuck anywhere in flood area and
sending GPS location coordinates of detected person to social activists so that they can drive their
boats to these locations and help them to saving their lives. Drones can explore the flooded areas
where human can’t even approach.
Approach:
Drone will be exploring flooded areas using GPS guided system while avoiding obstacles with
3D point cloud generated by OAK – D – Pro and a person detection model will be running
alongside on OAK – D – Pro (Myriad - X) as the person detected stuck in flood, the GPS
Coordinates will be sent to smart phone of social activists.
Tools to be used:
Pixhawk Px4 Drone Kit, OpenCV, Deepthi, ROS, Raspberry Pi, Drone, OAK – D – Pro, flight
controller, Open Vino, Intel’s person detection model (person-detection-0200), Stereo Vision,
3D Reconstruction, Obstacle Avoidance.
