You released this under the MIT license, however the icons are released under the CC BY 4.0 License. You should mention the original license.

Only the font was released under the SIL licence. Icons are released under a separate licence.

Hi,

You really should clarify this in your readme and license document.
Specially if the icons are coming from a 3rd party.

I just stumbled upon this is as well and apparently this caused confusion for other projects using these files as well. (Disclaimer: IANAL)

It is not always completely clear which version of Font Awesome the corresponding files have been generated with. This is especially relevant since the license changed between the different releases (based upon the official tagged releases at https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome):

  • Versions < 3.0: Everything is subject to CC-BY-3.0
  • Versions >= 3.0, < 3.1.0: Pictograms are subject to CC-BY-3.0, fonts subject to OFL-1.1
  • Versions >= 3.1.0, < 5.0: Fonts (including pictograms) are subject to OFL-1.1
  • Versions >= 5.0: Icons are subject to CC-BY-4.0, fonts subject to OFL-1.1

Given

"font-awesome": "^4.7.0",
it seems like the last changes use Font Awesome 4.7.0, thus being subject to OFL-1.1 (which matches the README) - some older repository versions refer to version 4.3.0, which is the same license-wise (see list above).

Using OFL-1.1 for non-font files (like SVG pictograms/icons) can be a bit tricky: OFL-1.1 section (3) states:

  1. No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as presented to the users.

This is especially relevant with the corresponding definition of "a modification":

"Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting, or substituting — in part or in whole — any of the components of the Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a new environment.

Applying this in a strict manner can mean that the generated files are subject to OFL-1.1 (section (5)), but cannot use the Font Awesome name due to being a modification of the original files.
