ATBC 2022 Cartagena - Colombia: RangeShifter workshop

9-10th July 2022

Instructors: Justin Travis, Greta Bocedi, Cristina Rueda Uribe and Tamsin Woodman (University of Aberdeen)

This workshop will cover use of both the Windows RangeShifter (v2.0.5) GUI and the RangeShiftR (v1.0.3) R package.

Workshop requirements

Participants should bring a laptop with R installed. RangeShiftR requires R 3.6.0 or higher and Rcpp 1.01 or higher. Devtools is recommended for an easy installation. If you have time prior to the workshop please install the RangeShiftR package following the instructions on the RangeShiftR GitHub, otherwise there will be time during the workshop to install the package.

The RangeShifter GUI is only available on Windows laptops and the executable can be downloaded here.

Workshop schedule

Day 1

  • 8:00 - 8:30: Round of introductions
  • 8:30 - 9:30: RangeShifter introduction (Greta Bocedi)
  • 9:30 - 10:00: Package installation and RangeShifter Tutorial 1 (download data here; R: find instructions here)
  • 10:00 - 10:30: coffee break
  • 10:30 - 13:00: Package installation and RangeShifter Tutorial 1 continued
  • 13:00 - 14:00: Lunch
  • 14:00 - 16:00: RangeShifter Tutorial 2 (R: find instructions here); Lynx reintroduction tutorial (only in R, find instructions here)
  • 16:00 - 17:00: coffee break
  • 19:00: Dinner (location TBC)

Day 2

  • 8:15 - 9:30: Dispersal talk (Justin Travis)
  • 9:30 - 10:00: Additional RangeShifter tutorials, choice of evolution of dispersal or dynamic landscapes (R: evolution of dispersal instructions and dynamic landscapes instructions
  • 10:00 - 10:30: coffee break
  • 10:30 - 11:00: Additional RangeShifter tutorials continued
  • 11:00 - 12:00: Group work on environmental layers
  • 12:00 - 13:00: lunch
  • 13:00 - 14:00: Group work on demography and dispersal
  • 14:00 - 14:15: coffee break
  • 14:15 - 16:00: Group presentations and wrap-up
